Lifetime Achievement Award - About ASTA - ASTA

Lifetime Achievement Award

This award is presented by ASTA following a recommendation from its Executive Committee. It is not an annual award, but is presented periodically to honor a travel industry luminary whose creativity, dedication and inspiration have advanced the travel and tourism industry.

It was renamed ASTA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in memory of Joseph R. Stone, to posthumously honor the Society’s only two-term president.

Bruce J. Charendoff - ASTA's Lifetime Achievement award

Bruce CharendoffASTA has awarded its Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the highest honors that ASTA presents to individuals, to Bruce J. Charendoff, senior vice president of government and external affairs at Sabre Holdings, Corp.

"Throughout the course of his career, Bruce's leadership, vision and commitment to the industry at large, shines strong and clear in everything he does. The success of Sabre under his leadership is a testament to this," said Chris Russo, ASTA president and chair. "No matter the challenge, his unwavering support of the travel agency industry is an inspiration to all."

As senior vice president of government and external affairs for Sabre, Charendoff combines his law degree with his passions for travel and tourism, aviation, coalition building and politics.  An officer of Sabre Holdings since 2000, he is responsible for the company's international, federal, state and local strategic planning, lobbying and grassroots programs and for outreach to travel industry and consumer groups.  Charendoff connects Sabre's businesses into alliances that seek the best possible public policy results.

Charendoff directed the successful campaign to deregulate the travel distribution industry in the United States.  He has advocated for "full content" from suppliers and for accountable travel taxation policies.  As Sabre continues to expand globally, he has played a major role in international regulatory affairs and export advocacy in Europe, Latin America and Asia. He is the longest serving president of the Interactive Travel Services Association (ITSA), the trade association representing global distribution systems and online travel companies. Under his leadership, ITSA created its strongest and most durable partnership with ASTA. The two organizations have worked, regularly and seamlessly, in pursuit of win/win policy solutions.  He created the "ITSA/ASTA Barbara O'Hara Advocacy Award," presented annually to the ASTA travel agent or group making the most important advocacy contribution.

Charendoff also founded and is chairman of Sabre Holdings Political Action Committee (PAC), one of the largest and most successful PACs in the nation.  Together Sabre Holdings PAC and ASTAPAC have worked to become industry leaders based on the strength of charitable matching contributions, which have dramatically increased PAC receipts and political effectiveness while doing good works in communities benefitting numerous health, civic and educational causes.

Charendoff earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School and his bachelor's degree in government and English from Wesleyan University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.  He also studied English at Oxford University.  Prior to Sabre, he worked at American Airlines in the Legal and Government Affairs departments and at Shipman & Goodwin, a law firm in Hartford, Conn.  He grew up in Manchester, Conn.  He has two teenage daughters, Sally and Caroline and lives in Washington, DC.
