Should you use a host agency?

Travel advisors who want flexibility of services are good candidates for host agency services. Utilizing a host agency allows independent advisors to start their own business with relatively limited investment and risk, and puts advisors in the position to build their own travel brand and gather their own clients. Inexperienced advisors benefit from the guidance and offerings of full service to help jump-start their business.

Like all companies, host agencies vary with what they offer. Essentially, the host agency allows the advisor to use their ARC, IATAN or CLIA credentials to sell travel. In exchange, the host receives a fee or commission. The business relationships range from the very basic to full-service with training, technology tools and marketing support.

Items to consider when selecting a host agency

  • They already work with successful independent advisors
  • They do not have any unresolved complaints against their agency
  • They are committed to developing a professional independent advisor network
  • They do not have a "travel advisor recruiting other travel advisors" program.
  • They do not tout "travel advisor ID cards" to obtain travel discounts.
  • They offer meaningful commissions and overrides
  • They are active ASTA and NACTA members
  • You understand what you are getting for your investment (if any)
  • They offer ongoing support

Items to consider when becoming a host agency

  • Increased volume should lead to increased revenue – are you adequately staffed to support the volume increase?
  • Making override contracts
  • Do you have enough contacts to make tour and cruise volume thresholds?
  • Increased GDS segment payouts - how is this addressed in your current GDS contract?
  • There are benefits to becoming a larger entity without adding extra office size, but be sure to review and/or revise your business plan to ensure that the move fits in with your overall business objectives.
